The Temazcal Ceremony is one of the oldest and most important ceremonies of the indigenous nations of North America. In Mexico we know that it has been practiced for thousands of years. It is a ceremonial and therapeutic steam bath where we enter a dome-like structure based on sacred geometry that represents the womb and are "reborn" upon exiting. Outside the structure we heat volcanic stones in the ceremonial fire, then introduce them slowly into the Temazcal. We use different medicinal herbs such as copal, sage, cedar, rosemary, lavender, and chamomile to cleanse and purify the body and the mind.
Health benefits of the Temazcal
The health benefits of the Temazcal are many: The body receives the same benefits as when we do cardio excercises, toxins are eliminated from the body, organs are stimulated and oxygenated, the brain produces oxytocin, dopomine, endorphins, circulation and sleep are improved, and the immune system is strengthened.
However, the Temazcal ceremony goes far beyond just physical benefits. It is a spiritual experience that helps us balance mind, body, spirit and emotions. In the Temazcal, we chant, sing, and invoke spiritual guidance. We take inventory of our lives and express gratitude. We dedicate the ceremony to our ancestors and descendants, but also to ourselves and all other living beings. It is a truly beautiful experience that is not to be missed while in Mexico.
Our Temazcal is located in San Pancho (San Francisco), a short ride from Sayulita.
Bring a bathing suit and towel. Do not eat anything two hours before the Ceremony, but drinking water is encouraged. Please avoid alcohol the day of the Ceremony. Come with an open heart.
The ceremony lasts approximately one hour. Hydration and fresh fruit will be provided afterwards.
